First up – I now know that optimum blog length is a 45 second read. That’s around 200 words – painfully short. So I shall have to type fast.
Lesson 2 homework is to find 5 ideas for features from the press and describe our potential angle and research sources.
Start this morning with breakfast televison. Lovely story about child commuting to school from Scottish island by boat.
‘Totally irresponsible!’ says Number 1 son (aged 15)
‘Who exactly?’
‘The parents. People shouldn’t have children if they live on a remote island’
Stunned by this highly subjective take, I snort with derision and suggest sterilising all adults foolish enough to live an inconvenient distance from local schools.
Son stands, or rather lolls, his ground, in armchair eating the bacon sandwich lovingly prepared by me (the power of knowing I’ve had to get up specially to make this really sets him up for the day) before the shortish walk to the school bus. No sterilisation for me, then.
But it’s a good story. Round here, there are some massive commutes as parents cross county boundaries, tundra etc to get their children to the smattering of surviving grammar schools. Meanwhile in the cities, there’s a wide choice of schools easily reachable by public transport. And that’s 215 words. Blast.

Very good Alison..reminds me of the level of well thought out and objective debate that often ensues here.
ReplyDeleteExcellent article, living opposite a village school I often find myself mouthing the words 'why don't you walk'. Maybe local catchment area no longer applies, or local has lost definition?
ReplyDeleteGreat piece. Has more impact for being around the 45sec read!!! Very topical and your take on it and the way you have written it makes it a good comment piece. Obviously, with the 200 word limit you are restricted here in making more of your pros and cons argument. But it's good.
ReplyDeleteThanks Alison. Short, pithy and amusing; educational too. 45 seconds? 200 words? Now there are some numbers to keep in mind; both new to me. A great help.
